Development of a radiation tolerant laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy system using a single crystal micro-chip laser for remote elemental analysis

For the development of the remote elemental analysis method in a radiation environment based on the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), the radiation effects on the laser oscillation properties of the single crystal (SC) Nd: YAG microchip laser (MCL) were investigated and compared with those of ceramics Nd: YAG MCL. The laser oscillation properties were measured under gamma-ray irradiation as a function of dose rate. The effects on the SC MCL properties were found to be very small compared to those on the ceramics, indicating minimal radiation effects on the LIBS signal when using SC MCL. Pulse energy and oscillating build-up time (BUT) were measured for a cumulative dose exceeding 1400 kGy. The pulse energy remained stable, and the laser continued to oscillate under irradiation. The BUT also remained stable, demonstrating negligible optical loss accumulation that could affect laser properties even at the demonstrated cumulative dose. The results indicate that the effects of dose rate and cumulative dose on SC MCL laser properties were minimal. The SC MCL was then integrated into the LIBS system, and the gadolinium signal of composite oxides, simulating fuel debris, was successfully measured at the dose rate of 5 kGy/hr. These findings highlight the radiation tolerance of SC MCL as a laser medium for remote LIBS applications in harsh radiation environments.

An Estimation method for an unknown covariance in cross-section adjustment based on unbiased and consistent estimator

A new estimation method of an unknown covariance, which is defined by the difference between the true covariance (the population covariance) and a prior covariance assumed by an analyst, is proposed. The unknown covariance is estimated using an empirical covariance consistent with the observed data. To estimate the unknown covariance, an unbiased and consistent estimator in regression analysis has been incorporated into the conventional cross-section adjustment. This estimator does not require assumptions for the probability distribution of the observation data. The statistical properties of this estimator were numerically verified. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed by another numerical test using actual integral experimental data. In the second numerical test, the modeling uncertainty (covariance) due to the deterministic analysis method was assumed to be unknown. The results showed that the proposed method could practically estimate the unknown covariance and adjusted cross-sections using only prior information on covariances.

弾塑性地震応答解析に基づく配管系の耐震設計手法の高度化

原子力発電施設における配管系の耐震設計では、設計対象を弾性はり要素でモデル化し、弾性解析に基づく保守的な応力評価を実施している。一方、これまでに実施された多数の実験結果から、配管系は設計の想定を超えるような地震入力下では弾塑性挙動を示し、破損に至るまでには大きな裕度を有していると認識されている。このような状況を踏まえ、適切な保守性と合理性を有する耐震評価のため、弾塑性応答挙動を考慮した新たな耐震設計・評価手法の構築を目指し、2019年に日本機械学会より発電用原子力設備規格設計・建設規格の事例規格が発刊された。初版発刊後は事例規格の継続的な改善のために議論と検討を進め、2022年には疲労評価に用いるサイクルカウント法等に修正を加えた改訂版の発刊が決定した。また、次期改訂に向け、配管支持構造物の弾塑性評価を規格に取り入れる議論が進められている。本稿では、2022年の事例規格における主要な改訂内容、改訂の背景、次期改訂に向けた取り組み状況及び今後の課題について紹介する。

X-ray free electron laser observation of ultrafast lattice behaviour under femtosecond laser-driven shock compression in iron

Over the past century, understanding the nature of shock compression of condensed matter has been a major topic. About 20 years ago, a femtosecond laser emerged as a new shock-driver. Unlike conventional shock waves, a femtosecond laser driven shock wave creates unique microstructures in materials. Therefore, the properties of this shock wave may be different from those of conventional shock waves. However, the lattice behaviour under femtosecond laser-driven shock compression has never been elucidated. Here we report the ultrafast lattice behaviour in iron shocked by direct irradiation of a femtosecond laser pulse, diagnosed using X-ray free electron laser diffraction. We found that the initial compression state caused by the femtosecond laser driven shock wave is the same as that caused by conventional shock waves. We also found, for the first time experimentally, the temporal deviation of peaks of stress and strain waves predicted theoretically. Furthermore, the existence of a plastic wave peak between the stress and strain wave peaks is a new finding that has not been predicted even theoretically. Our findings will open up new avenues for designing novel materials that combine strength and toughness in a trade-off relationship.

The Development of a Multiphysics Coupled Solver for Studying the Effect of Dynamic Heterogeneous Configuration on Particulate Debris Bed Criticality and Cooling Characteristics

For a sodium-cooled fast reactor, the capability for stable cooling and avoiding re-criticality on the debris bed is essential for achieving in-vessel retention when severe accidents occur. However, an unexploited uncertainty still existed regarding the compound effect of the heterogeneous configuration and dynamic particle redistribution for the debris bed's criticality and cooling safety assessment. Therefore, this research aims to develop a numerical tool for investigating the effects of the different transformations of the heterogeneous configurations on the debris bed's criticality/cooling assessment. Based on the newly proposed methodology in this research, via integrating the Discrete Element Method (DEM) with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Monte-Carlo-based Neutronics (MCN), the coupled CFD-DEM-MCN solver was constructed with the originally created interface to integrate two existing codes. The effects of the different bed configurations' transformations on the bed safety assessments were also quantitively confirmed, indicating that the effect of the particle-centralized fissile material had the dominant negative effect on the safety margin of avoiding re-criticality and particle re-melting accidents and had a more evident impact than the net bed-centralized effect. This coupled solver can serve to further assess the debris bed's safety via a multi-physics simulation approach, leading to safer SFR design concepts.

本調査では内閣府からの委託を受けて、特定復興再生拠点区域の内部被ばく評価に資するため、福島県の3市町村(双葉町、大熊町、富岡町)において、大気浮遊塵中の放射性物質に関する調査を実施した。対象とした市町村にダストサンプラーを設置し、大気放射能濃度を調査するとともに、実測値に基づく内部被ばく線量を評価した。本報告書は、当該受託事業が開始した2018年度から2021年度までの測定結果をとりまとめたものである。大気放射能濃度及び実測値に基づく内部被ばく線量評価結果、基礎データとして気象観測データなどをデータベース化した。

Maraging steels, known for ultrahigh strength and good fracture toughness, derive their superior properties from lath martensite structure with high-density nanoprecipitates. In this work, we designed a novel Fe-based medium-entropy alloy with a chemical composition of Fe$$_{60}$$Co$$_{25}$$Ni$$_{10}$$Mo$$_5$$ in atomic% by utilizing the characteristics of the maraging steels. By a single-step aging of only 10 min at 650 $$^{circ}$$C, the alloy showed microstructures consisting of a very high number density of (Fe, Co, Ni)$$_7$$Mo$$_6$$-type nanoprecipitates in lath martensite structure and reverted FCC phase, which led to ultrahigh yield strength higher than 2 GPa. This work demonstrates a novel direction to produce strong and ductile materials by expanding the horizons of material design with the aid of high-entropy concept and overcoming the limits of conventional materials.

Attention-based time series analysis for data-driven anomaly detection in nuclear power plants

To ensure nuclear safety, timely and accurate anomaly detection is of utmost importance in the daily condition monitoring of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), as any slight anomaly in a plant may result in an irreversible and serious accident, as well as high costs of maintenance and management. Nevertheless, due to the unique inherent attributes of anomalies, the difficulty of automatic detection in NPPs is increased. Previous model-driven anomaly detection approaches required skilled priori knowledge, leading to their limited usability. Commonly adopted deep learning-based data-driven anomaly detection approaches may not easily acquire the most relevant features when dealing with sensor data containing redundant information with uneven distribution of anomalies. To alleviate these issues, this paper propose an attention-based time series model for anomaly detection to ensure safety in NPPs. First, we employ one-dimension convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) backbone for feature extraction to preserve original inherent features of time series inputs. Subsequently, we originally adopt soft-attention mechanism to automatically extract the most relevant temporal features considering the specificity of anomaly detection in NPPs. The performance of the proposed model was experimentally validated on the High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) anomaly case dataset simulated using the analytical code. The experimental results indicate that the proposed model was capable of detecting anomalies in NPPs with superior performance to the baseline model, while ensuring fast detection at short time steps.

Chemical interaction between Sr vapor species and nuclear reactor core structure

The distribution of Sr in the reactor would be influenced by a chemical reaction of Sr vapor species with a structural material of internal reactor and fuel cladding materials; stainless steel (SS) or Zircaloy (Zry) cladding during 1F-NPS accident. The chemical interaction between Sr-Zry and Sr-SS has been described. The reaction tests have been performed to investigate the chemical interaction behavior under possible severe accident conditions. The tests have been conducted up to 1523 K under steam atmosphere. It was confirmed that Sr-Zr-O and Sr-Si-O compounds were formed through 2 kinds chemical interactions; gas-solid reaction and liquid-solid reaction. The gas and liquid species of Sr in a good contact with the solid Zry and SS to form Sr-Zr-O and Sr-Si-O compounds, respectively. Sr was deposited onto the Zry and SS surfaces and lead to the formation of reaction product. Thus, this study highlights the possibility that Sr was deposited and retained in the core structure where the temperature was elevated during the accident in the 1F-NPS.

Analysis of gadolinium oxide using microwave-enhanced fiber-coupled micro-laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

We report on the analysis of pure Gd oxide and its detection when mixed in surrogate nuclear debris using microwave-enhanced fiber-coupled micro-laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. The target application is remote analysis of nuclear debris containing U inside the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. The surrogate nuclear debris used in this study contained Gd, Ce, Zr and Fe. The sample was ablated by microchip-laser under atmospheric pressure conditions while a helical antenna propagated 2.45 GHz 1.0 kW microwaves for 1.0 ms into the laser ablation plume. The results showed that microwave-induced plasma expansion led to enhanced emission signals of Gd I, Zr I, Fe I, Ce I, and Ce II. Microwave irradiation enhanced the standard deviations of the Gd and Ce emissions and lowered the detection limit of Gd by 60%.

日本原子力研究開発機構(JAEA)廃炉環境国際共同研究センター(CLADS)では、令和3年度英知を結集した原子力科学技術・人材育成推進事業(以下、「本事業」という)を実施している。本事業は、東京電力ホールディングス株式会社福島第一原子力発電所の廃炉等を始めとした原子力分野の課題解決に貢献するため、国内外の英知を結集し、様々な分野の知見や経験を、従前の機関や分野の壁を越えて緊密に融合・連携させた基礎的・基盤的研究及び人材育成を推進することを目的としている。平成30年度の新規採択課題から実施主体を文部科学省からJAEAに移行することで、JAEAとアカデミアとの連携を強化し、廃炉に資する中長期的な研究開発・人材育成をより安定的かつ継続的に実施する体制を構築した。本研究は、研究課題のうち、令和3年度に採択された「福島第一原子力発電所の廃止措置における放射性エアロゾル制御及び除染に関する研究」の令和3年度の研究成果について取りまとめたものである。本研究は、英国の研究者と協力して、エアロゾル分散制御をしながら、同時に高度な微粒子測定と評価が可能な安全なレーザー除染システムを開発することを目的としている。日本側では、CFD解析を活用して、セシウム等を浸透した物質へのレーザー加工により発生する放射性エアロゾルを水ミストとスプレーにより効果的に制御するシステムを開発する。具体的には、エアロゾルと水界面の相互作用に関連する英国側研究成果を活用してレーザー加工を行い、高精度検出器による10nm$$sim$$10$$mu$$mの広範囲なエアロゾル粒子の計測、水ミストやスプレー液滴の電気化学的処理による粒子分散制御、並びに得られたデータを基にして分散制御に関するCFDシミュレーションの精度向上を目指す。最終的には日英の研究成果を活用して、両国の試験施設において実証試験を行うことにより、今後、両国の廃炉現場において適用可能性のある高線量エリアのレーザー除染計画に役立てる。

Effect of extrusion ratio in hot-extrusion on kink deformation during compressive deformation in an $$alpha$$Mg/LPSO dual-phase magnesium alloy monitored by ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction

To elucidate the effect of extrusion ratio in hot-extrusion on the deformation behavior during compression of Mg$$_{97}$$Zn$$_{1}$$Y$$_{2}$$ alloy containing about 25-vol% long-period stacking ordered phase (LPSO) in the HCP structured $$alpha$$ matrix ($$alpha$$Mg), ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction measurements were performed under compressive loading using four types of samples: as-cast and after hot extrusion at 623 K with extrusion ratios of 5.0, 7.5 and 12.5. The macroscopic yielding was observed to appear by the occurrence of basal slip of $$alpha$$Mg in the as-cast sample and at the onset of twinning in the hot extruded samples. The applied stress to initiate slip, twinning, and kinking increased by hot extrusion and then decreased with increasing extrusion ratio. LPSO shared higher stress than $$alpha$$Mg and the ratio to the strength increased as the extrusion ratio increased.

日本原子力研究開発機構(JAEA)廃炉環境国際共同研究センター(CLADS)では、令和3年度英知を結集した原子力科学技術・人材育成推進事業(以下、「本事業」という)を実施している。本事業は、東京電力ホールディングス株式会社福島第一原子力発電所の廃炉等を始めとした原子力分野の課題解決に貢献するため、国内外の英知を結集し、様々な分野の知見や経験を、従前の機関や分野の壁を越えて緊密に融合・連携させた基礎的・基盤的研究及び人材育成を推進することを目的としている。平成30年度の新規採択課題から実施主体を文部科学省からJAEAに移行することで、JAEAとアカデミアとの連携を強化し、廃炉に資する中長期的な研究開発・人材育成をより安定的かつ継続的に実施する体制を構築した。本研究は、研究課題のうち、令和3年度に採択された「中赤外レーザー分光によるトリチウム水連続モニタリング手法の開発」の令和3年度の研究成果について取りまとめたものである。本研究は、中赤外レーザーを用いたキャビティリングダウン計測システムによる「濃度60Bq/ccレベル」トリチウム水短時間計測の原理実証を成果目的とする。令和3年度は、上記目標を達成するため、(1)キャビティリングダウン装置に関する研究、及び(2)環境条件下における水素同位体組成評価と標準試料作製(再委託先: 弘前大学)を行った。(1)においては、中赤外キャビティリングダウン試験を行った。実験室に光学ベンチ(3m$$times$$1.2m)を設置し、光学ベンチ上に設計した光キャビティを構築した。次に、キャビティリングダウン計測に必須なレーザー光源を開発した。波長4.34$$mu$$mから4.72$$mu$$mの範囲に可変可能で、最高出力22mW、ビーム品質M$$^{2}$$=1.1のレーザー開発に成功した。(2)においては、標準試料の作製として、複数の試薬会社より市販されている重水標準溶液を利用して水素同位体標準溶液作製を進め、安定同位体である重水試料の準備を行った。また市販の重水試薬を購入し、約100Bq/Lの標準試料作製準備が整った。さらに、屋内外の同位体比計測の測定準備を行った。低バックグラウンド液体シンチレーション計数装置の性能評価を行い、試料量10mLで2,400分計測すると検出下限値は約0.6Bq/Lであることを確認した。これにより一般環境中トリチウム濃度を計測する準備が整った。

Liquid phase sintering of alumina-silica co-doped cerium dioxide CeO$$_{2}$$ ceramics

Pure and low $$alpha$$-Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$-SiO$$_{2}$$ co-doped ceria specimens were prepared by conventional ceramic processing using powder metallurgy. The effect of co-doping on the microstructural and structural properties of cerium dioxide was investigated by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The co-addition of alumina and silica promoted liquid phase sintering (LPS) and significantly contributed to grain growth, even in the small concentrations of the present study (1 wt% and 2 wt%). A glassy-look phase precipitated at the grain boundaries, characteristic of liquid phase sintering. The addition of dopants to the formulation greatly enhanced the grain growth process without disturbing the CeO$$_{2}$$ structure.

Urban factors and mental health symptoms in children of the Tokyo Early Adolescence Survey; Impact of proximity to railway stations

The study tested the hypothesis that proximity of home to railway stations is a positive predictor of mental health at age 10 years. Using the Tokyo Early Adolescence Survey we examined relationships between distance from home to the nearest railway station and SDQ (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) scores for hyperactivity/inattention, prosocial behaviour and emotional symptoms. Greater distance to the nearest railway station was associated with SDQ-derived hyperactivity/inattention scores in the unadjusted analysis across all 4052 analyzable children, and in the fully adjusted analysis in boys ($$beta$$ = 0.198, 95% C.I. 0.009 to 0.386, p = 0.040) but not in girls ($$beta$$ = 0.007, 95% C.I. -0.164 to 0.177, p = 0.940). There were no associations with other SDQ-based outcomes. If replicated, these findings suggest that access to high-quality transit may be associated with improved hyperactivity/inattention outcomes in children living in urban environments.

Laser-driven neutron generation realizing single-shot resonance spectroscopy

Neutrons are powerful tools for investigating the structure and properties of materials used in science and technology. Recently, laser-driven neutron sources (LDNS) have attracted the attention of different communities, from science to industry, in a variety of applications, including radiography, spectroscopy, security, and medicine. However, the laser-driven ion acceleration mechanism for neutron generation and for establishing the scaling law on the neutron yield is essential to improve the feasibility of LDNS. In this paper, we report the mechanism that accelerates ions with spectra suitable for neutron generation. We show that the neutron yield increases with the fourth power of the laser intensity, resulting in the neutron generation of $$3times10^{11}$$ in $$4pi$$ at a maximum, with $$1.1times10^{19}$$ Wcm$$^{-2}$$, 900 J, 1.5 ps lasers. By installing a "hand-size" moderator, which is specially designed for the LDNS, it is demonstrated that the efficient generation of epithermal (0.1-100 eV) neutrons enables the single-shot analysis of composite materials by neutron resonance transmission analysis (NRTA). We achieve the energy resolution of 2.3% for 5.19-eV neutrons 1.8 m downstream of the LDNS. This leads to the analysis of elements and isotopes within sub-$$mu$$s times and allows for high-speed nondestructive inspection.

Small SFRs can have a negative void coefficient of reactivity, so the analysis of the CDA event sequence in small SFRs is valuable for the investigation of the reactor characteristics for the future research and development of SFRs. In this study, the typical initiating events of a CDA in small SFRs were evaluated with the computational code, SAS4A. The event progression of ULOF and UTOP in the low void reactivity reactor is found to be slow due to the effective operation of the negative reactivity feedback and the absence of significant positive reactivity insertion. No power excursion occurs in the initiating phase. In ULOF, the cladding melt and relocation behavior becomes more important for the evaluation of the event progression due to its positive reactivity.

Two-dimensional elemental mapping of simulated fuel debris using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

この実験研究では、レーザー誘起ブレークダウン分光法(LIBS)を用いて模擬燃料デブリの二次元元素マッピングを実行し、サンプル表面の元素組成と分布を決定した。本物の燃料デブリはサンプルとして入手できないため、化合物や金属などの予測材料から模擬燃料デブリを作製した。Nd:YAGレーザーの第2高調波を使用して、サンプル表面にプラズマを生成させた。さらに、エシェル分光器を使用して、435$$sim$$650nmの可視波長範囲でプラズマからの発光を検出した。収集されたデータセットのサイズと複雑さから従来のデータ分析方法では良い効果が得られないことが判明した。そのため本研究では、主成分分析や多変量曲線分解能代替最小二乗法などのラベルフリー化学測定法に基づく方法を実装して、サンプル内の各成分に関する空間情報およびスペクトル情報を取得した。結果として、LIBSと化学測定法の統合が、事前知識がほとんどまたは全く無くてもサンプル(燃料デブリなど)に関する定性情報を取得するための非常に効果的なツールであることを実証した。

A 3D particle-based simulation of heat and mass transfer behavior in the EAGLE ID1 in-pile test

The ID1 test was the final target test of the EAGLE experimental framework program. It was used to verify that during a core disruptive accident, the molten fuel could be discharged via wall failure of an inner duct in FAIDUS, a design concept for the sodium-cooled fast reactor. The ID1 results revealed that the wall failure behavior owed to the large heat flow from the surrounding fuel/steel mixture. The present study numerically investigated the heat transfer mechanisms in the test using the finite volume particle method in the three-dimensional domain. The thermal hydraulic behaviors during wall failure were reproduced reasonably. The present three-dimensional simulation mitigated inherent defects of our previous two-dimensional calculation and clarified that the solid fuel and liquid steel close to the outer surface of the duct can expose the duct to high thermal loads, resulting in the wall failure.

希薄燃焼と不活性ガス添加は、水素予混合火炎の燃焼速度を制御するのに有用であり、固有不安定により希薄水素火炎の前面にセル状構造が形成されることはよく知られている。しかし、希薄水素予混合火炎の不安定現象に対する不活性ガス添加の影響は十分に理解されていないため、火炎の不安定性を実験的に調査する必要がある。実験では、不安定現象の特性を解明するために、フラットバーナー上の水素/酸素/不活性ガス(Ar, N$$_{2}$$, CO$$_{2}$$)予混合火炎のセル状構造と変動を、直接観察,レーザー診断および発光強度を使用して取得した。その結果、不活性ガス添加量,当量比,総流量とセル状火炎の特性との相関関係が明らかになり、これらのパラメータが火炎の不安定性に及ぼす影響が議論された。
